A farmer was walking home from his fields one day with his donkey when the donkey stumbled and fell into a ditch. Now, the farmer was mean and the donkey was old. He looked into the ditch at the donkey and thought, “It’s an old donkey, and it’s going to be a lot of work to get that donkey out of that hole. I’m just going to bury him here and let him die.”
So, every day the farmer came back and dumped his trash on top of the donkey in an effort to bury him. However, every day the donkey shook the trash off his back and trampled it under his feet. One day, when the farmer came back to dump his trash, he looked into the hole and the donkey was gone. The donkey had been trampling the trash and, every day, getting a little bit higher until finally he was just able to step out of that hole and walk to his freedom.
The moral of the story is: What are you going to do when you find yourself in a ditch? What are you going to do when you find yourself with people throwing trash on you? Because on this journey we call life, these things are going to happen. They are inevitable. What is not inevitable is your response to the situation. How are you going to respond?
Are you going to get better or are you going to get bitter? Like the donkey, are you going to use adversity to propel yourself to greater heights, or are you going to let it defeat you and live a life of defeat? It’s entirely up to you. Be like the donkey and use adversity as an opportunity. Decide to be better, not bitter.
