“Does Your Partner Want Space or a Divorce?”

“Is space good for relationships?” Are you wondering if your partner simply needs some space or is considering divorce? Here are three questions that can help you determine if giving space could benefit your relationship. Hi, I’m Cody Butler, a marriage coach and the founder of Better Marriage. Today, I want to talk to you about how to know if your partner needs some space or if they want a divorce. I’ll give you three questions you can ask yourself, which will give you a good indication of the answer to that question.

The first question you should ask yourself is, “How long has my partner been distant?” How long has this been going on for? Is this a recent thing? Is it a few months, a few years, or a decade? The longer the distance and separation has been going on, the closer you are to a divorce. However, if your spouse has become distant recently or it’s been a relatively short period of time, maybe a year or two, it’s possible that just some space is what’s needed to bring some restoration into the relationship. With education, support, and the right environment, the relationship can flourish again.

The second question that can help you determine whether your partner needs space or wants a divorce is, “What is the sex situation within the marriage?” This leads to the third question, which is, “What is the communication like?” A healthy sex life is a good indicator of a healthy relationship for men. For women, healthy communication is a good indicator of a healthy relationship. No sex or poor communication is a bad indication. If a man is getting no sex, he may be looking for sexual satisfaction elsewhere, indicating that he wants a divorce. If a woman is getting no communication or poor communication, it’s probably a divorce situation.

The length of time that sex or communication has been lacking is also important. If a man has not been getting any sex for five years, the chances of some space saving the relationship are very slim. He may have checked out and be exploring other options. Similarly, if communication has been poor or nonexistent for five or more years, it’s more likely a divorce situation. However, if it’s only been a short period of time, maybe a year or two, there is still hope for restoration or maybe separation.

Remember that this is a continuum, not an either-or situation. It’s a continuation of how bad the situation is and how long it has been going on. The further along the continuum, the closer you are to divorce. If you want to save your marriage and prevent divorce, I have a free workshop that can help you. You can learn how to end the fighting immediately, restore communication, and bring back the sex and intimacy into your relationship. You’ll know exactly what the problems are and how to fix them.
